I was asked for references during my first interview?

I just interviewed for more of an executive position where I was asked for my references, when I could start, and what my salary expectations were. I was told that they had about five more interviews to conduct and that they would be in touch towards mid May. Is it a good sign that they asked for my references? Does this mean that I am even more of a candidate of interest? I’ve never been asked for my references during a first interview and don’t know what to make of it.

Actually it means nothing other than if you expect to be in the running for this position, you need to have references to check. You are one of a half dozen, so hopefully you stood out of the crowd. Hopefully your references will support your written word. And hopefully you didn’t ask for too much salary. If not, there are the other 5 candidates.
